The story of our skating family begins with two determined parents, Carl and Velma, who arrived in San Antonio with little more than hope, grit, and three of their four young daughters on their hips. They didn’t come with wealth or connections — they came with a work ethic strong enough to build a future from the ground up. What they found in San Antonio was an opportunity, and what they gave back was a legacy that would shape generations.

Their journey into the roller‑skating world began modestly. Carl and Velma took on the responsibility of teaching and operating one of the local skating rinks, learning every detail of the business from the inside out. They swept floors, fixed skates, taught lessons, and welcomed families with the warmth that would later become their trademark. When they were eventually offered the chance to take over that rink, they didn’t hesitate. They saw not just a business, but a way to create a safe, joyful space for families — something they themselves had always valued.

As their family grew, so did their vision. Carl and Velma didn’t simply want to run a rink; they wanted to build a future for their daughters and, one day, their grandchildren. With that purpose in mind, they began expanding across the city. Each new location was built with intention — a rink for each daughter, a foundation for each branch of the family, and a legacy that could be passed down through generations. Their dream was not only to serve San Antonio, but to ensure that their children and grandchildren would always have something meaningful to carry forward.

That dream became a reality through the creation of several beloved skating centers, including The Rollercade, Car‑Vel Skateland, Skateland East, and Car‑Vel Skate Center. Over the years, they opened three additional locations, selling some as the family expanded. One of those rinks continues to operate today under new ownership, still echoing the legacy they built. But the heart of their vision — the rinks built for their daughters — remains alive and thriving each separately owned.  

Each rink became more than a place to skate — it became a community hub. Birthday parties, school events, first dates, family nights, and lifelong friendships all found a home on those polished wooden floors. Generations of San Antonians grew up under the glow of disco lights, guided by the same values Carl and Velma instilled from the beginning: family, fun, and a sense of belonging.

Today, the legacy lives on exactly as they hoped it would. Every one of the original family rinks remains open and operating, now run by their daughters and even some of their grandchildren. The next generation continues to honor the traditions set decades ago while bringing fresh energy and new ideas to the business. The music has changed, the skates have evolved, but the heart of the experience — the joy of families coming together — remains exactly the same.

From humble beginnings to a citywide skating legacy, Carl and Velma’s story is a testament to resilience, vision, and the power of family. Their dream didn’t just build rinks — it built memories, community, and a tradition intentionally crafted to roll forward through every generation.
